Sourcing · Desiccated Coconut

Sri Lankan desiccated coconut — global #1 export origin.

Sri Lanka is the top global exporter of desiccated coconut, with exports growing approximately 38% year-over-year in the first nine months of 2024. We supply UK bakery, food-service and retail trade with fine and medium grade desiccated coconut, with aflatoxin testing on every batch — a non-negotiable for the coconut category which UK FSA treats as high-risk.

The Aflatoxin Question

Coconut is high-risk — testing isn't optional.

UK FSA categorises coconut as a high-risk category for aflatoxin contamination. The mycotoxin is produced by moulds that thrive in warm, humid conditions — exactly the climate coconut is processed in. Industrial-scale Sri Lankan producers operate to UK/EU MRL standards but verification per batch matters.

Beyond aflatoxin, rancidity is the second risk — coconut's natural oils can oxidise, especially in poor storage. We monitor peroxide value and source from producers with mature drying, cooling and packaging discipline.

What we test for

  • Aflatoxin (UK MRL compliance per batch)
  • Peroxide value (rancidity early warning)
  • Moisture content (typically <3%)
  • SO2-free certification where applicable
